The Afghan Post, Afghanistan’s national postal service, is embarking on a major initiative to digitize its operations across the country, BBC Monitoring reported citing NationalAfghanistan TV channel.
Currently operating 460 post offices, the Afghan Post aims to modernize its services, enabling citizens to manage and track their documents via mobile phones. Zabiullah Omar, head of the commerce department of Afghan Post, explained that the new system will allow users to check the status of their documents online and receive notifications when their documents are ready for collection.
"We are working on standardizing and digitizing our [postal] services in Afghanistan. One should be able to access the details of his [or her] documents on his cellphone," Omar said. "Once a person’s documents are submitted for processing, they should not need to visit the office again to check their status. They will be able to do this through their phone."
The Afghan Post currently handles a significant volume of documents daily. Omar reported that the service distributes approximately 12,000 passports daily, with three new passport centers recently opening to issue around 6,000 additional passports each day. The Afghan Post processes over 30,000 documents daily, including those from the Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Higher Education, and Education Ministry.
Residents have shown support for the digital upgrade, noting that it will greatly assist those living outside the capital by making document management more accessible and efficient.
"It is hard for people to travel from provinces to the capital to collect their documents. Once the system is digitalized, it will be a great help," Naqibullah from Kabul commented.
Abdul Hamid from Helmand Province added, "If this happens, it will speed up and simplify the process of handling our documents."
Waisullah, a local man, echoed the sentiment, stating, "This can facilitate the process. People are facing huge problems in provinces."
The Afghan Post has also established partnerships with several communications and postal companies to enhance service delivery across the country.
