Uzbekistan proposed a rating system for the energy efficiency of its regions. This plan was announced during a presidential meeting focused on energy saving and enhancing energy use efficiency. The Ministry of Energy will compile and publish a list of the top 10 regions, organizations, and properties with the highest and lowest electricity consumption.
The meeting outlined several measures already implemented:
- A procedure for energy audits of consumers based on international standards is being introduced. Following the audit, binding measures will be developed.
- The results of energy audits and subsequent achievements will be included in annual business plans and approved by supervisory boards.
- Targets for electricity and gas savings have been set for the regions for 2024.
Uzbekistan has been facing energy shortages in recent years. In February, the Ministry of Energy imposed restrictions on electricity consumption of up to 400 MW during peak hours nationwide.
Gas-fired power plants generate nearly 90% of Uzbekistan's electricity. Gas production in the country continues to decline, contributing to the energy shortage.
