The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reports that 27% of Afghanistan's population is experiencing a food crisis at an emergency level. Strengthening the agricultural sector is viewed as a crucial step towards achieving self-sufficiency.
Rafi, a resident of Kabul, works from dawn to dusk to support his seven-member family. He has called for help from the government and aid organizations, highlighting the challenges of living in rented accommodation and paying AFN 3,000 ($42) per month.
"We need assistance; we are from Afghanistan and nowhere else. We live in the old city of Kabul and don't have our own house," Rafi said.
The Ministry of Economy is working with aid organizations to increase assistance and tackle food insecurity in Afghanistan. Abdul Latif Nazari, the Deputy Minister of Economy, said: "We are coordinating with the international community and aid organizations to address food insecurity through increased assistance."
Economic analysts stress the need for investment in large infrastructure projects, particularly in agriculture, to achieve self-sufficiency. Mohammad Nabi Afghan, an economic analyst, stated: "If the international community focuses on infrastructure projects instead of charity, we can achieve self-sufficiency."
A recent report from the United Nations warned that 15.8 mn people in Afghanistan will face severe food insecurity this year.
