Uzbekistan's ambassador to Afghanistan, Yadgar Shadmanov, highlighted the focus on strengthening economic and trade cooperation between the two nations. Ambassador Shadmanov disclosed that in 2023, delegations from both countries engaged in over 20 meetings, aiming to bolster bilateral cooperation, expand economic and trade relations, and discuss economic plans in Afghanistan.
Uzbekistan is set to invest $400 mn in thermal energy production and cement manufacturing in Afghanistan, showcasing a commitment to economic development in the region. Ambassador Shadmanov emphasized that Uzbekistan's focus on economic matters with Afghanistan stems from the latter's lack of international recognition.
Addressing the Qosh Tepa Canal project, the ambassador clarified Uzbekistan's stance, expressing support for its development under advanced and principled guidelines. He reiterated that while governments have the right to utilize shared and border river waters, Uzbekistan advocates for the canal's construction to adhere to advanced principles.
Trade between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan in 2023 totalled nearly $900 mn. Both countries aim to increase this figure to $1.5 bn by 2025.
