President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has called for urgent and serious attention to the situation in Afghanistan, highlighting the need to avert a looming humanitarian crisis, Akorda reported .
Speaking at a meeting with foreign ministers from member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Tokayev emphasized the importance of establishing stability in the war-torn nation.
"The situation in Afghanistan deserves close attention. We must pay special attention to the issue of climate change. Without urgent preventive measures, this problem can plunge our planet into a dramatic period of global natural disasters. Extreme weather conditions are becoming one of the world's major challenges. In this regard, it is necessary to update the SCO approaches to combating natural disasters," Tokayev stated.
His remarks come amidst growing concerns over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, exacerbated by ongoing conflict and natural disasters.
Tokayev endorsed the initiative to set up a United Nations regional center for sustainable development goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan, to be based in Almaty. This center aims to coordinate international efforts in promoting sustainable development and addressing the immediate needs of the Afghan people.
Earlier Uzbekistan sent substantial humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, assisting those affected by devastating floods . The aid package included 48 tons of flour, 22 tons of rice, 100,000 canned goods, 44 tons of pasta products, 25,000 liters of vegetable oil, 100,000 instant noodles, and 100 tents equipped for 10 people each, along with 96 water storage tanks of 1,000 liters each.
