As the world witnesses a surge in international student mobility, Uzbekistan has steadily risen as a contributor to this global trend, with 109,945 students pursuing education abroad.
According to data released by UNESCO and highlighted in the 2024 World Migration Report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Uzbekistan sent 109,945 students to study overseas in 2021.
While this number may seem modest compared to China and India, which top the list with over 1.5 mn students respectively, Uzbekistan's presence underscores its growing importance in the global education landscape.
The report underscores an upward trajectory in the internationalization of education. In 2001, a total of 2.2 mn students were studying abroad globally. Fast forward to 2021, and this figure has more than tripled to 6.39 mn students.
The United States remains the most preferred destination for international students, hosting over 833,000 students in 2021. The United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Canada follow suit as popular choices. Germany hosts 126,359 international students while simultaneously sending out a substantial number for overseas education, including those from Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan's emergence as a noteworthy contributor to international student mobility can be attributed to several factors. The country has been actively investing in its education system, fostering partnerships with foreign universities, and promoting exchange programs to encourage students to pursue educational opportunities abroad.
