Tajikistan authorities announced plans to introduce forced labour as punishment for individuals engaged in fortune-telling and witchcraft, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan reports. This decision, revealed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, aims to bolster efforts to combat occult-related criminal activities and maintain public order.
Proposed amendments to administrative legislation will enable authorities to subject sorcerers, fortune-tellers, and those propagating religious teachings in violation of the law to compulsory labour for up to six months.
Presently, Tajikistan's legislation penalizes witchcraft and fortune-telling under Article 482 of the Code of Administrative Offences. Offenders face fines ranging from 40 to 50 times the calculated index, with each instance valued at 70 somonis (equivalent to approximately $7). For repeat offences, fines may escalate to 60-100 times the initial amount.
Law enforcement officials highlight the disregard for Islamic Sharia and legal norms among certain segments of the populace as a contributing factor to the widespread prevalence of such practices. By introducing stricter measures, authorities aim to deter individuals from engaging in activities deemed unlawful under the prevailing legal framework.
