President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan endorsed a law ratifying the international convention on wage protection on March 12, the Ministry of Justice reports.
In February, the Senate granted approval for the ratification of the Wage Protection Convention of the International Labor Organization, a treaty backed by 99 nations. This convention aims to guarantee timely payment of wages to workers in cash, with its regulations extending to all sectors of the economy and categories of employees.
Under this convention, the payment of wages through debts, vouchers, tokens, high-alcohol beverages, or harmful substances is prohibited. Furthermore, it ensures the safeguarding of workers' rights and contributes to enhancing the national labor protection framework.
Senators highlighted that ratifying this convention serves to enhance domestic labor laws, ensure the effective enforcement of international labor standards, and reaffirm Uzbekistan's dedication to fundamental international principles and norms regarding workers' rights.
Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan experienced remarkable economic progress in 2023, marked by a substantial increase in average salaries across the nation. By the end of the year, the average salary saw an impressive annual growth of 17.2% , reaching UZS 4.55mn ($368).
