Turkmenistan may become a full member of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) in 2024, the newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan" reports.
The article is devoted to the results of the working visit of the Chairman of the People's Council (Halk Maslahaty) Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Turkey, where he took part in the Antalya Diplomatic Forum and held talks with Turkish President Recep Erdogan.
Berdimuhammedov told reporters that his country would host a representative summit this year to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Turkmen classicist Makhtumkuli Fraghi. "Chairman Halk Maslahaty said that Turkmenistan could become a member of the Organisation of Turkic States at this summit".
Turkmenistan is the only Turkic-speaking state in Central Asia to remain an observer in the OTS (from 2021), along with Hungary and Northern Cyprus.
Last year, at the OTS summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, the chairman of the People's Council proposed that a roadmap be drawn up to develop the organisation's cooperation in the energy sector.
"Having rich oil and gas fields, Turkmenistan pursues a policy of reliable and safe energy exports to the world markets, in particular, supplies of Turkmen natural gas and electricity to neighbouring countries and states in the region".
