The National Center for Maternal and Child Protection in Kyrgyzstan recently announced that Kyrgyz doctors have successfully performed two surgeries involving laser coagulation of the retina in premature infants suffering from retinopathy.
Retinopathy of Prematurity
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition affecting premature infants, characterized by abnormal blood vessel development in the retina, the light-sensitive membrane of the eye. The condition poses significant risks to vision if left untreated.
Successful Collaboration
The surgeries were conducted in collaboration with Dr. Asel Sharipova, a specialist from Kazakhstan. The initiative received active support from the National Red Crescent Society and the Swiss Red Cross, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in advancing medical care.
Prior to the successful surgeries, Kyrgyz doctors underwent specialized training facilitated by the National Red Crescent Society, the Swiss Red Cross, and the L’Occitane Foundation. This training equipped them with the necessary skills to diagnose and treat retinopathy in premature infants.
Expanding Access to Care
In line with efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility across the country, specialists from Osh and Kyzyl-Kiya also underwent training in screening for retinopathy in prematurity. This initiative, supported by UNICEF, aims to broaden the reach of medical services for children in remote regions of Kyrgyzstan.
