Tanzila Narbaeva, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and the National Commission on Combating Human Trafficking and Decent Labor Issues, recently held a video conference meeting with representatives of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the World Bank to discuss the improvements in labor conditions.
The “Better Work” Program in Uzbekistan
In May of the previous year, the ILO and the IFC signed a memorandum to implement the joint program “Better Work” in Uzbekistan. This program aims to develop decent labor standards and entrepreneurship in the cotton-textile industry. The meeting discussed the ongoing work in Uzbekistan regarding the implementation of this project and future priorities.
Promoting Decent Work Principles
The representatives of international organizations have made extensive efforts to promote the principles of decent work in Uzbekistan. They aim to apply international standards widely to the production process, including production, technical, labor, and environmental standards. These efforts are designed to protect the rights and interests of workers comprehensively and ensure their social protection.
The establishment of the National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking and Decent Labor Issues is expected to make a significant contribution to promoting international labor standards in Uzbekistan.
Progress of the “Better Work Uzbekistan” Program
To date, six companies from three regions have registered in the “Better Work Uzbekistan” program of the ILO. Work is being carried out to implement international standards based on the project’s requirements. Additionally, this year, efforts to implement these works have been initiated in eight more companies.
Social Responsibility in the Textile Industry
During the discussions, attention was paid to the issues of social responsibility of textile industry enterprises. This includes the protection of workers’ rights, improvement of working conditions, and ensuring the environmental sustainability of production. The importance of developing social entrepreneurship in the field was also noted.
The Roadmap for 2024-2025
In cooperation with the National Commission and the ILO, it was decided to develop a new “Roadmap” for the implementation of the national program on decent work in Uzbekistan in 2024-2025. In the enterprises of the cotton and textile industry, it was agreed to define clearly targeted measures for the wide implementation of Better Work standards and to implement them in cooperation.
