Investigation Underway
The incident is now under investigation by a commission headed by Habib al-Rahman Jihadi, the head of the Taliban’s General Intelligence Directorate (GID) for the Badakhshan branch. The investigation was ordered by the acting prime minister and governor.
Suspected Theft
It is suspected that the search and rescue team that first arrived at the site may have stolen the money. The incident is linked to Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
It remains unclear why such a large sum of cash was on board the plane. Given that more than $10,000 in currency cannot be taken out of Russia, the presence of $1.2mn raises questions about the purpose of the cash and its intended use in Thailand.
