Shavkat Mirziyoyev launches six green power plants, boosting capacity by 2.4 GW

On December 27, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev inaugurated six “green” power plants with a total capacity of 2.4 GW, as per the President's Press Service. This event signifies the country’s commitment to sustainable energy and its efforts to combat climate change.

    International collaboration for sustainable future

The event was graced by the presence of international dignitaries and industry leaders, including Masdar CEO Muhammad Jameel Al-Ramahi, Vice President of China Energy Engineering Corporation Wu Yun, Chairman of the Board of China Energy International Group Zexiang, and Chairman of the Board of China Gezhouba Group Lin Xiaodan. Their participation underscores the global cooperation required to tackle the pressing issue of climate change.

    Step towards energy independence

In recent years, Uzbekistan has created favourable conditions for the development of the private sector and leading foreign companies in the industry. As a result, projects to expand the potential of renewable energy in Uzbekistan are being successfully implemented. For instance, solar power plants were commissioned in the Karmaninsky and Nurabad districts with a total capacity of 200MW. These plants have so far generated 1 bn kilowatt-hours of “green” energy.

    Power of sun and wind

Emirates’ Masdar has completed the construction of three modern photovoltaic stations in the Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Surkhandarya regions with a total capacity of 900MW. Additionally, the first stage of a wind farm with a capacity of 500MW was built in the Tamdyn district of the Navoi region. In the Bukhara and Kashkadarya regions, the Chinese “China Gezhouba Group” completed the construction of the first stage of two solar stations with a total capacity of 1000MW.

    Impact of green energy

The full introduction of these projects, with a total cost of $2bn, will provide uninterrupted access to electricity for two mn households. It will also save 2bn cubic meters of natural gas and boost industrial production and services for $4bn.

    Looking ahead

The President stressed the importance of further development in this sphere. Currently, work is underway on projects for the construction of 22 solar and wind power plants with a capacity of 9GW. By 2030, it is planned to increase the capacity of “green” power plants to 27GW. This will save 25 bn cubic meters of natural gas annually and reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere by 34 mn tons.
