The Russian writer Zakhar Prilepin's proposal for the annexation of Uzbekistan to the Russian Federation, as conveyed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, is clarified as his "personal opinion," Maria Zakharova, the ministry's representative informed.
Zakharova emphasized the strong strategic partnership and alliance relations between Russia and Uzbekistan, stating that Prilepin's views on labor migration in Russia do not represent Moscow's official stance.
While disassociating from Prilepin's remarks, Zakharova mentioned that Russia is actively "working on a number of regulatory, organizational, informational, and other measures to make cooperation in the field of migration more orderly and mutually beneficial."
Concerns over the impact of Prilepin's statement led to the summoning of the Russian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. During the meeting, it was emphasized that such expressions from leaders of a friendly nation contradict the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance between the two countries.
Russian Ambassador Oleg Malginov assured that Prilepin's statements "have absolutely nothing to do with the official position of the Russian leadership on a friendly and independent Uzbekistan."
Maria Vladimirovna Zakharova has been serving as the Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 2015. She holds a Candidate degree in Historical Sciences, equivalent to a Russian PhD.
