An official announcement from the Cabinet of Ministers revealed that Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the former crown prince of Kuwait, has been appointed as the new emir of the country, Anadolu Agency reports.
The 83-year-old leader's ascent to the throne follows the constitutional provisions of Kuwait, where the crown prince assumes the role of emir when it is his designated turn. Sheikh Meshal takes over from the late Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who passed away at 86.
The burial ceremony for the late emir is scheduled for December 17 and will be an intimate gathering exclusively attended by close relatives. The solemn event will be held at the Bilal ibn Rabah Mosque in Kuwait City. Following this, on December 18 and 19, the new emir, Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, along with the royal family, will be available to receive condolences at Bayan Palace.
In an official statement, the Kuwaiti government expressed its condolences on the passing of the emir and declared 40 days of mourning. Additionally, official institutions will be closed for three days to mark the period of national mourning.
