Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani expressed his views on the current state of Afghanistan, comparing it to the troubled nation of Somalia and claiming that the international community no longer finds the country of interest. Ghani made these remarks in response to the ongoing expulsion of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries, particularly Iran and Pakistan, Daryo's correspondent in Afghanistan reported.
Ghani, who fled Afghanistan in the face of the Taliban's swift takeover in 2021, addressed the expulsion of Afghan immigrants, attributing it to both political and economic challenges. The former president asserted that the expulsions were a consequence of the deteriorating situation within Afghanistan, leading to increased migration.
Somalia's Ongoing Struggles
Ghani's comparison to Somalia, a nation marred by conflict and insecurity, further underscores the severity of Afghanistan's situation. Somalia has faced prolonged political instability and a devastating civil war since the 1990s. Clashes around the city of Laascaanood have led to a surge in internal displacement, with hundreds of thousands of Somalis fleeing their homes. The region is grappling with famine, disease outbreaks, and the adverse effects of natural disasters such as droughts and floods.
Afghanistan Post-Taliban
The aftermath of the Taliban's accession to power in Afghanistan has witnessed a significant exodus of its citizens, driven by a genuine fear of persecution. Despite the perilous conditions within Afghanistan, some nations have continued to deport Afghan refugees and asylum seekers. Reports from Amnesty International highlight instances of violence, denial of asylum applications, and other human rights violations against those seeking refuge.
At the beginning of the year, 3.8 mn people were internally displaced in Afghanistan, living in precarious conditions with limited access to basic human rights. The Norwegian Refugee Council has reported that the Taliban forcibly evicted internally displaced individuals from urban areas, compelling them to return to villages where extreme poverty and an inability to sustain themselves awaited.
