President Sadyr Japarov, on November 10, addressed the UNESCO General Conference in Paris during its 42nd session, highlighting the pressing global threats to peace, security, and intercultural cooperation. He underlined the pertinence of UNESCO as an intellectual platform amid these challenges.
Expressing concern over climate change and its impact on mountain ecosystems, Japarov noted the vulnerabilities of high-mountainous regions, specifically their glaciers and biodiversity, emphasizing the imminent risks.
Kyrgyzstan's active efforts in promoting sustainable mountain development at the UN for over two decades were highlighted. The UN resolution "Sustainable Mountain Development" and the subsequent designation of 2023-2027 as the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions were mentioned as critical milestones, culminating in the planned Second Global Mountain Summit “Bishkek+25” in 2027.
The President invited participation and commitment to preserving mountain ecosystems, seeking support for Kyrgyzstan's initiatives at UNESCO.
Highlighting Kyrgyzstan's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, Japarov discussed the country's membership in the global Partnership for Greening Education. He also emphasized the active cultural heritage protection initiatives and the country's desire to continue contributing to UNESCO's values, proposing re-election to the Executive Council.
Quoting the Kyrgyz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov, Japarov closed his address: “Take care of the earth and nature, because there will be no life on Earth. Take care of freedom and peace, because there will be no peace in our lives. Take care of love, morals, and conscience, for a person will cease to be a person. Don’t forget the past, because without it there is no future.”
