Uzbekistan’s chess players made a strong showing at the Grand Swiss 2023, the year’s main tournament, held from October 25 to November 5 in the Isle of Man. The tournament, which determines two participants for the Candidates tournament, saw over 100 of the world’s strongest chess players compete, including four representatives from Uzbekistan: Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Zhavohir Sindarov, Nodirbek Yakubev, and Shamsiddin Vohidov.
Chess coach Georgy Shvanov shared insights on the Uzbeks’ performance. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, following his victory in Qatar, scored 7 points out of 11, securing 12th place and a rating increase of 4.5 points. He also received $8,000 in prize money.
Nodirbek Yakubboev started with a defeat but later won three victories, ending with 6.5 points and 14th place. He also received $8,000 in prize money.
Zhavohir Sindarov showed the best result among Uzbek chess players, securing 8th place with 7 points. His rating performance of 2793 Elo corresponds to the level of a super grandmaster. This result, along with his success in Qatar, allowed Sindarov to score a rating of 2700, placing him among the chess elite. He also received $18,000 in prize money.
The Grand Swiss 2023 was a significant event for Uzbekistan’s chess players, demonstrating their growing prowess on the global stage.
