A tragic incident occurred in northern Iraq on September 26 when a powerful fire engulfed a wedding hall in Karakosh, claiming the lives of at least 100 people and leaving another 150 injured. This devastating event has sparked outrage due to the apparent lack of safety measures at the venue.
"The incident took place in the Hamdaniya area of northeastern Nineveh province, where fireworks were ignited, prompting the formation of an investigative committee to determine the cause."- stated CNN.
Iraq's Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, revealed that the hall did not meet safety standards, and the use of fireworks led to the collapse of the ceiling on those inside. Fourteen individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, with investigation results expected soon.
At the time of the fire, the wedding had approximately 1,300 guests, and the groom and bride survived but sustained severe injuries. Survivors have criticized the absence of fire extinguishers and safety measures within the hall.
A three-day mourning period has been declared.
This tragic incident has raised questions about the authorities' negligence and the lack of safety protocols, highlighting Iraq's ongoing struggle for recovery and security after years of conflict and instability.
