UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the international community to prioritize nuclear disarmament. In a statement released to coincide with the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Guterres highlighted the escalating atomic threat, comparing it to the tensions experienced during the Cold War. He expressed concern that decades of progress in preventing the use, spread, and testing of nuclear weapons are being undermined.
Guterres emphasized the need to strengthen the nuclear disarmament regime, urging all countries to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and for nuclear-weapon States to impose a moratorium on nuclear testing. He stressed the importance of utilizing dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation to alleviate tensions and eradicate the atomic threat, emphasizing that the only effective solution is the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Guterres called on global collaboration to ensure that these destructive weapons become relics of the past.
The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed on September 26 each year. Established by the UN General Assembly on December 5, 2013, the day aims to raise public awareness about the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and mobilize international efforts to create a world free from their presence.
