Situated in the southern reaches of Kazakhstan, Shymkent's ancient citadel has become an increasingly popular destination, drawing tourists from neighboring countries such as Russia, Uzbekistan, and Türkiye. This growing influx of visitors is shedding light on the rich history and cultural heritage that Shymkent has to offer.
Archaeologists have long believed that Shymkent was the cradle of civilization in this region, and their ongoing research in the area reinforces this notion. The sprawling complex, which covers nearly five hectares, has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur, boasting captivating landmarks like the Stairway of Hope, the Tower of Love, the Tower of Alchemists, and ancient ovens that once served as crucial tools for cooking and firing.
Madina Kenzhekulova, the director of the historical and cultural complex, shared her enthusiasm about the growing interest in the site, stating;
“In seven months, our complex, exhibition halls, and archaeological sites were visited by more than 5,000 foreign tourists, as well as 35,000 citizens of Kazakhstan. Tours are conducted in four languages – Kazakh, English, Russian, and Chinese."
Among the recent visitors to Shymkent are renowned travel bloggers Sara Baldelli and Andrea Zamuner from Italy. The intrepid duo arrived in Kazakhstan with a mission to introduce their followers to the rich tapestry of the country's culture and traditions. Sara Baldelli expressed her enthusiasm for the city and its people, saying;
“Our first impression of Shymkent is extremely positive. The people in Kazakhstan are very friendly, and we feel safe here. We plan to spend a week visiting the various attractions."
