Elon Musk, the owner of the social network previously known as Twitter (before its rebranding in July), has announced the launch of an online voice communication feature on the X.com platform. This development marks a significant step in Musk's vision for Twitter's evolution.
Musk took to Twitter on August 31 to make the announcement, stating that "Video and audio calls are coming to [platform] X." He further specified that these communication features would be available on Android, iOS, Mac, and PC platforms. Notably, users will not need a subscriber's phone number to make calls; a username will suffice. Musk described X.com, after the introduction of this feature, as a "global address directory."

- Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC
- No phone number needed
- X is the effective global address book
That set of factors is unique.
In the initial stages, there are no plans to enable call encryption. However, it is on the roadmap to add the capability to enable or disable encryption dynamically in the future. Musk emphasized the uniqueness of X.com's combination of calling capabilities.
The development follows Musk's acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, after protracted negotiations and an attempt to disrupt the deal. In under a month, Musk presented his vision for Twitter 2.0 to employees, which included the introduction of two-way audio and video chats for online communication without the need for a phone number. Additionally, he announced plans to implement end-to-end encryption in private messages on the platform.
Since Musk's ownership, Twitter has introduced various new features for its Blue premium subscribers. These enhancements include the ability to write tweets with up to 10,000 characters (in contrast to the standard 280), edit tweets after publication, and download long videos in high resolution, among others.
