In response to recent protests involving the burning of copies of the Quran, the Danish government announced on August 25 its intention to introduce legislation aimed at making such actions illegal in public spaces. This move comes as part of the country's broader efforts to alleviate tensions with Muslim nations that have been inflamed by these incidents.
Both Denmark and Sweden have witnessed a series of public protests over the past few weeks where copies of the Quran were burned or otherwise defiled, causing significant outrage in Muslim-majority countries. In response to these protests, several Muslim nations demanded that the Nordic governments take action to prevent such incidents.
Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard addressed the media during a press conference, stating;
"The government will propose legislation that prohibits the inappropriate handling of objects with essential religious significance for a religious community."
He further explained that the proposed legislation would encompass the burning of not only the Quran but also other religious texts such as the Bible and Torah.
The move has not been without controversy, as some Danish opposition parties argue that banning Quran burnings could encroach upon freedom of speech. However, Hummelgaard countered these concerns by stating;
"I fundamentally believe there are more civilized ways to express one's views than burning things."
Earlier in July, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed the government's commitment to finding a legal means to prevent the burning of religious texts, especially in front of foreign embassies. The proposed legislation, if passed, would enable authorities to take action against individuals who engage in such acts. Those found guilty of breaking this law could face fines or up to two years of imprisonment.
Although a specific timeline for parliamentary voting on the bill has not been provided, it is evident that the Danish government is taking these incidents seriously and seeking ways to address the issue proactively. Neighboring Sweden has also indicated its intention to explore legal avenues to prevent similar desecrations of the Quran. The heightened tensions have led Swedish security officials to raise the country's terrorist threat level.
