The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has announced the capture of Urozhainoe village in the Donetsk region. This advance is a part of a counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is opening the way towards Berdyansk and Mariupol, two key cities captured by Russian forces. The liberation of Urozhainoe village represents a significant strategic gain and allows Ukrainian forces to exert pressure on previously held territories, Euronews reports.
Aerial attacks on port infrastructure
Russian forces have reportedly carried out aerial attacks on the port infrastructure along the Danube river using Shahed drones. The attacks targeted warehouses, granaries, and the port of Reni. While damage was inflicted, prompt responses from the State Emergency Service managed to contain the fires resulting from the attacks. Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of violating international law by endangering food security and maritime shipping in the Black Sea.
In response to the aerial attacks, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have "destroyed" 11 Russian drones. The Ukrainian General Staff later reported that 13 Shahed drones were shot down in the Odessa and Nikolaev regions. Russia countered these claims by stating that it shot down three Ukrainian drones over the Kaluga region and one in the annexed Crimea. These incidents highlight the ongoing use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the conflict.
Geopolitical implications
The conflict in Ukraine continues to impact international relations and maritime trade. Ukrainian authorities have asserted that temporary routes for civilian ships were established from August 8, allowing a merchant ship to depart from the port of Odessa for the first time in a month. This "temporary corridor" serves as a crucial connection for Ukrainian seaports and contributes to maritime trade stability in the region.
