Uzbekistan is gearing up for a potential record-breaking year in peach and nectarine exports in 2023. The nation has witnessed a remarkable surge in shipments to foreign markets, owing to a combination of a plentiful harvest and attractive prices. According to analysts from EastFruit, the export season for peaches and nectarines commenced in May's third decade, and within the initial two months, an unprecedented volume of these fruits was dispatched to foreign markets.
Preliminary trade statistics reveal that from May 21 to July 20, 2023, Uzbekistan exported a total of 51,100 tons of peaches and nectarines, generating revenue of $41.0 mn. These figures represent a substantial 27% increase in physical terms compared to the same period last year and almost double the exports recorded during the corresponding time in 2021.
Despite having about two more months left in the export season, Uzbekistan appears to be well-positioned to surpass its previous export record set in 2020. Back then, the country achieved an all-time high by exporting 82,200 tons of peaches and nectarines, bringing in revenue of $61.3 mn. Notably, the current export volume has already surpassed the figures from the same period in 2020 by an impressive 25%.
The significant rise in exports can be attributed to a favorable combination of abundant harvest and relatively lower prices this season. As of July 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for peaches and nectarines in Uzbekistan is 27% lower than the corresponding date in the previous year and 38% lower than the same date in 2021.
