The Minister of Digital Development and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan, Bagdat Musin, recently addressed the press to encourage his compatriots to conserve their mobile internet usage, media reports.
Baghdat Musin highlighted the potential financial strain that extensive mobile data consumption could place on individuals and suggested that switching to Wi-Fi when at home could alleviate this issue.
Musin's office has received data from several international rating agencies indicating that Kazakhstanis utilize a considerable amount of mobile data. He emphasized that the internet is a finite resource and that excessive use can lead to communication degradation. Furthermore, installing additional base stations to accommodate high traffic volumes requires significant investment, presenting a challenge for Kazakhstan's telecom operators.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has also expressed concern regarding the quality of internet and cellular communication in Astana, the capital city. He believes the lack of connectivity negatively impacts the city's economy.
The Minister of Digital Development and Aerospace Industry explained that the issue is partly due to cheap tariffs offered by mobile operators and a market monopoly held by JSC "Kazakhtelecom."
These operators struggle to cope with increasing traffic consumption and consequently have to raise tariffs to maintain their network infrastructure. As a result, tariffs are set to rise from August.
