Karim Massimov, the former Prime Minister ana chairman of the National Security Committee (NSC) of Kazakhstan, along with his former deputies Anuar Sadikulov and Daulet Yergojin, have been officially designated as sponsors of terrorism, KazTAG reports.
The classification was made based on the Law on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing enacted in 2009. To be included in this list, a Kazakh citizen must have a legally binding conviction for committing terrorist or extremist crimes.
As a result of this designation, all assets belonging to these individuals will be frozen by banks, and they will lose access to notary and insurance services. The accusations against Karim Massimov include charges of treason, seizure of power by force, and abuse of official powers.
The Astana Court of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan announced an indictment against him, leading to an 18-year prison sentence. His former deputies, Anuar Sadikulov and Daulet Yergojin, received sentences of 16 years and 15 years, respectively. Marat Osipov, another former deputy, was sentenced to three years.
Karim Massimov was arrested in 2022 on suspicion of treason following nationwide anti-government protests.
