Evgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, has accepted the proposal of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to halt the movement of armed fighters in Russia and work towards de-escalating tensions, the press service of the President of Belarus reports.
On June 24, negotiations between Lukashenko and Prigozhin lasted the entire day, resulting in an agreement to prevent a conflict on Russian soil. This move comes after a video allegedly showing the aftermath of a missile strike on a Wagner Group camp was circulated on the "Razgruzka Wagnera" Telegram channel on June 23. The Russian Ministry of Defense dismissed the video as misinformation and an information provocation.
However, on that day in a statement published by his press service, Prigozhin said that a deliberate strike would have led to the death of numerous fighters, and declared a rebellion against the leadership of the Russian armed forces. He claimed that their goal is to address the prevailing chaos in the country, stating that they have the support of a significant number of Russian servicemen.
Reports indicate that Wagner mercenaries have reportedly taken control of military installations in Rostov, including the aerodrome and the headquarters of the Southern Military District. This situation has led to increased security measures in several regions of Russia, with military forces sealing off administrative buildings in Rostov.
Evgeny Prigozhin is a Russian entrepreneur and the head of the Concord group of companies. He is head of the Wagner Group, a mercenary organization involved in military conflicts in Africa, Syria, Ukraine, and other regions worldwide. Prigozhin's operations have been closely linked to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
