An oil supply partnership between Kazakhstan and Germany has been reinforced through a new agreement signed by KazMunayGas and Rosneft Deutschland, Astana Times reports.
An agreement was recently signed between Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, KazMunayGas (KMG), and Rosneft Deutschland to supply crude oil to PCK Raffinerie refinery in Schwedt, Germany. The Karachaganak field in Kazakhstan will provide 100,000 tons of crude oil per month to Germany until the end of 2023, delivering a total volume of at least 890,000 tons. This consistent oil supply is expected to meet Germany's energy needs and support its oil refining industry.
KMG Chairman, Magzum Mirzagaliyev, expressed interest in increasing the volume of oil deliveries from other Kazakh oil companies as well as to continue and expand oil supplies to Germany.
Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during a joint media briefing with Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, acknowledged the significant contribution of Kazakhstan to Germany's energy supply. Steinmeier emphasized the importance of the additional volume of Kazakh oil to Germany.
“The supply of additional volume of Kazakh oil will ensure the future of the oil refining industry and fuel supply for East Germany,” Steinmeier stated.
This recent agreement builds upon the existing cooperation between the two countries. In 2022, the German government requested the supply of Kazakhstan's oil via the Druzhba pipeline to the PCK Raffinerie refinery. The deliveries started in February and continued until May, with 190,000 tons of oil already transported. An additional 100,000 tons were planned for June.
To facilitate the transportation of Kazakh oil to Germany, a transit agreement had been reached with the Russian side. It outlined the transportation of 1.2mn tons of Kazakh oil to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline in 2023, further strengthening the energy partnership between the three nations.
