The Ministry of Energy informs that the export of Russian gas to Uzbekistan through the territory of Kazakhstan will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.
An important agreement has been reached between Russia and Uzbekistan regarding the supply of Russian gas to the Central Asian country. The Ministry of Energy has announced that the export of Russian gas to Uzbekistan will commence in the fourth quarter of 2023, facilitated through the territory of Kazakhstan.
The document was signed on June 16, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a prominent event that brings together business and government leaders from around the world. The Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, Jorabek Mirzamahmudov, and the CEO of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, signed the agreement in the presence of Uzbekistan's Deputy Prime Minister, Jamshid Khojayev.
The agreement includes a "Road Map" that outlines the necessary preparations for the republic's gas transmission system to receive Russian gas. The signing of the agreement marks an important step towards enhancing energy cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan, strengthening their bilateral relations even more.
In November 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kazakh President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev met at the Kremlin to discuss the coordination required for delivering Russian gas to both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The establishment of a "tripartite gas union" with the participation of Uzbekistan was also discussed.
Furthermore, in December, Mirzamahmudov stated that Uzbekistan intends to import gas and electricity from neighboring countries based on commercial contracts rather than relying solely on alliances or unions.
Prior to the signing of this agreement, Gazprom had already established cooperation in the gas sector with Kazakhstan. On January 18, a roadmap for cooperation was signed between Gazprom and Kazakhstan, which paved the way for the subsequent agreement reached between Gazprom and Uzbekistan on January 24.
