The New York Post reports, referring to an official from the Biden administration, that China has maintained a spy base in Cuba since at least 2019. The purpose of this base is to gather intelligence from various countries, with a primary focus on the United States.
A spokesperson from the White House, speaking anonymously, revealed that U.S. intelligence has been aware of China's espionage activities from Cuba and their broader intelligence-gathering efforts worldwide for some time. In response to this threat, American intelligence services have intensified their efforts and made progress through diplomatic channels and other means.
The confirmation of the Chinese spy base came after news broke that China and Cuba had reached a preliminary agreement to construct an electronic listening station on the island. However, John Kirby, the representative of the White House National Security Council, denied the veracity of this information, stating that US intelligence has long recognized China's regular espionage activities from Cuba as an ongoing occurrence.
The administration official further noted that China has been contemplating the expansion of its logistics, base, and intelligence infrastructure to enhance its military influence. This move aligns with China's efforts to extend its global reach. In 2019, China initiated modernization efforts to bolster its espionage capabilities in Cuba.
The Cuban authorities have vehemently denied the published information, with Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio dismissing it as baseless slander. He took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction, criticizing the media for spreading unfounded claims that lack supporting evidence and fail to meet minimum standards of communication.
