Geologists discovered that New York City is sinking because of the heaviness of its skyscrapers, New York Post informs.
According to reports, the city is sinking at a pace of 1-2 millimeters (0.03 - 0.07 inches) annually, with certain parts facing even quicker subsidence. Whereas the incident may appear trivial to some, Tom Parsons, a lead researcher, and geologist with the US Geological Survey, cautions that it makes New York susceptible to natural calamities, especially in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
The city faces substantial flood hazards, as sea level rise along North America's Atlantic coastline is 3-4 times faster than the worldwide mean. According to Tom Parsons, 8.4mn people in New York are vulnerable to flooding at different rates.
Throughout the last ten years, New York has seen the devastation caused by the aforementioned problem. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Ida's strong precipitation in 2021 both caused fatalities and major damage throughout the city.
Tom Parsons is concerned regarding the structural integrity of many of the city's constructions in the decades to come.
