Samarkand International Airport is negotiating with major European airlines to launch flights, media reports.
'We are negotiating with major European airlines to launch flights to Samarkand from European countries; in addition, our new base airline Air Samarkand, is in the route network, which is planned as European destinations, so routes to the countries of the Middle East and Southeast Asia,' the manager of the airport of Samarkand, Maria Sharavina told media.
Since early 2023, the airport has also significantly increased the flight program to the cities of Russia, direct flights to Kazan, Ufa, Sochi, Samara, and Mineralnye Vody ('Mineral Waters'), and increased the frequency of flights to Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, and Moscow.
Samarkand International Airport is an airport of entry in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 6 km (3.7 mi) from the city center. It is the second busiest airport in Uzbekistan, after Tashkent International Airport, and serves as a hub for Uzbekistan Airways. The airport underwent significant renovations in 2019, including constructing a new terminal and runway expansion to increase its capacity and improve the passenger experience.
