German and Chinese foreign ministers were unable to reach an agreement regarding human rights violations in China against Uyghurs in Xinjiang, German Press Agency reports.
During their meeting, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock cited the UN Charter and Convention to her Chinese counterpart, Qin Gang, who responded by stating that China does not need to be lectured on human rights and that there were no universal standards for them.
Berbock countered that there were "common standards" for human rights globally, and conveyed her concern about limited civil society and democracy in China.
Qin Gang denied allegations of human rights abuses against Uyghurs in Xinjiang, calling it a fight against radicalism and separatism, and urged foreign forces to stay out of the issue.
