The World Health Organization (WHO) on January 11 warned against the use of two India-made cough syrups linked to 20 child casualties in Uzbekistan. According to the UN agency, the two products, AMBRONOL and DOK-1 Max, produced by Indian Marion Biotech were 'substandard' and failed to meet quality standards.
The alert was released after at least 20 children passed away in a Central Asian country in December 2022 after consuming Doc-1 Max syrup.
As a result, India’s health authority suspended manufacturing at the company and Uzbekistan banned both the import and sale of cough syrup. The investigation is underway.
The UN agency also said in a statement that laboratory test of AMBRONOL and DOK-1 Max syrups samples 'found both products contained unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and /or ethylene glycol as contaminants' which are toxic to humans, especially to children, and may cause death.
