ACWA Power, a leading Saudi Arabian energy company, is investing approximately $15 bn in green energy initiatives in Uzbekistan. This revelation was made by Anthony Brinkhuizen, the company's Vice President for Central Asia in construction, during an interview with Daryo.
The announcement came on the sidelines of the International Partnership Initiatives Week, held in Tashkent from October 17 to 25, where discussions focused on Uzbekistan's transition to sustainable energy sources. Brinkhuizen emphasized ACWA Power's commitment to developing large-scale projects aimed at harnessing electricity from both wind and solar power.
"We are investing a total of $15bn in green energy projects in Uzbekistan, allocated across 15 distinct projects. Notably, 87% of our investments will be directed towards wind energy, while the remainder will support the production of green hydrogen. After Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan represents the largest share of our investments," Brinkhuizen stated.
Currently, two of the 15 projects are operational and generating electricity, while an additional six are under construction, with plans to launch them by 2025. Brinkhuizen noted that the company aims to have all 15 projects fully operational by 2030.
Among the key projects highlighted is the connection of a modern steam-gas power plant with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts to the grid in the Syrdarya region, set to commence operations on November 27, 2023.
This plant, part of the $1.1bn IES project, is expected to provide electricity to over 3 million households and numerous industrial enterprises. Additionally, the initial phase of the green hydrogen project is projected to produce 3,000 tons of hydrogen, alongside plans for mineral fertilizer processing and the establishment of a 52-megawatt wind power station.
Uzbekistan ranks as ACWA Power's second-largest investment market, featuring 15 ongoing projects aimed at facilitating the country's energy transition and sustainable development objectives, in line with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's vision.
