Tashkent is increasing public transport capacity and strengthening road safety measures as the 2026/27 school year begins on September 2, with heavier traffic and pedestrian flows expected around educational institutions.
According to the Tashkent City Transport Department and the Unified Traffic Management Centre, traffic volumes are expected to increase across the capital, particularly near schools and other educational institutions.
Ahead of the new academic year, pedestrian crossings around schools have been repainted, while traffic lights have undergone technical inspections and their operating schedules have been adjusted. Tashkent currently operates 170 bus routes with more than 24,000 scheduled trips daily. The average number of buses deployed during the summer was 1,622, but this will increase to 1,707 from the start of the new school year.
Metro services will also be intensified during peak hours. Trains on the Chilonzor Line are planned to run every 1.5–2 minutes, the Uzbekistan Line every 3–3.5 minutes, the Yunusabad Line every 4–4.5 minutes, and the elevated Ring Line every 7–8 minutes. Of the 14 new metro trains planned for delivery this year, 11 are already operating on the network, while the remaining three are expected to be put into service.
The Transport Department urged drivers and parents to follow traffic rules, particularly around schools. They were advised to reduce speed, give way to pedestrians, avoid blocking bus stops and sidewalks, and stay out of dedicated public transport lanes.
Authorities also earlier encouraged students, parents and other residents to use public transport where possible to reduce road congestion and prevent traffic jams around educational institutions.
