The number of general secondary education institutions in Uzbekistan reached 11,118 at the beginning of the 2025/26 academic year, increasing 1.3-fold, or 30% compared with the 1991/92 academic year, according to the National Statistics Committee.
Uzbekistan had 8,557 schools in 1991/92, with the number rising to 9,289 by 1995/96 and 9,726 by 2000/01. The figure reached 9,803 in 2005/06 and remained largely unchanged through 2010/11, when the country had 9,806 general secondary education institutions.
The number subsequently declined slightly to 9,720 in 2015/16 before beginning to increase again. It reached 10,181 in 2020/21, 10,289 in 2021/22 and 10,522 in 2022/23.
The number of schools continued to grow in the following years, reaching 10,750 in 2023/24, 10,943 in 2024/25 and 11,118 in 2025/26. Overall, the number of general secondary education institutions increased by 2,561 compared with 1991/92, representing roughly a 30% rise over the 35-year period.
Uzbekistan is also set to establish a regional preschool education centre in Tashkent focused on preschool education research, teacher training and international cooperation, with plans for the institution to eventually operate under UNESCO’s auspices.
Earlier, it was reported that World Bank has approved a $105mn financing package to strengthen primary education in six regions of Uzbekistan through teacher training, school expansion and reforms aimed at improving foundational learning skills for around 2mn children.
