Uzbekistan is considering introducing a food bank system after officials studied European experience in Brussels, according to the National Agency for Social Protection of Uzbekistan.
A delegation including representatives from the Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction of Uzbekistan, National Agency for Social Protection of Uzbekistan, and Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan conducted a study visit to the European Food Banks Federation in Brussels from March 31 to April 5.
The visit focused on examining international best practices for establishing food bank systems, including the management of surplus food and mechanisms for distributing it to vulnerable populations.
During the program, participants reviewed legal and organizational frameworks, logistics and storage systems, and cooperation models with donor organizations such as producers, retail chains, and food service providers. European experience in organizing volunteer networks was also discussed.
Presentations highlighted the role of food banks in European Union countries in ensuring food security, reducing food waste, and supporting socially vulnerable groups.
Following the discussions, officials considered the phased introduction of a food bank system in Uzbekistan. Key areas include improving the regulatory framework, integrating the system with the national social protection registry, and strengthening international cooperation.
According to the agency, the outcomes of the visit are expected to support ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing social protection, promoting efficient use of food resources, and reducing poverty.
