President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with Taro Aso, Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan and Chairman of the Parliamentary League of Friendship with Uzbekistan, as well as the League of Friendship with the Countries of Central Asia. The meeting was attended by members of the League, on December 19, as it was reported by the press service of the president.
The discussions focused on key issues related to further expanding the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Japan, with a particular emphasis on interparliamentary cooperation. The role of parliamentary dialogue in promoting bilateral relations and supporting joint initiatives was highlighted. The contribution of the Parliamentary League of Friendship, particularly its Chairman Taro Aso, to the development of multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan was noted.
Participants underscored the importance of strengthening interparliamentary ties and enhancing the function of parliamentary friendship groups in facilitating cooperation across political, economic, and cultural areas. The meeting concluded with an agreement to organize the next Interparliamentary Forum in Uzbekistan in 2026 to continue parliamentary dialogue and coordination.
The Parliamentary League of Friendship with Uzbekistan was established in 2002 and currently comprises over 40 members, including prominent Japanese politicians, influential deputies, and diplomats engaged in promoting relations with Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Tokyo on December 18 for his official visit to Japan. At Haneda International Airport, he was welcomed by Japan’s Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Yoshimasa Hayashi, along with other officials. Upon arrival, the president also met with Uzbek nationals living, working, and studying in Japan.
The visit’s agenda includes discussions on further strengthening the strategic partnership and broad cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan. Scheduled meetings with senior representatives of major Japanese companies and financial institutions will focus on expanding trade, economic ties, and advancing joint investment projects. Several bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the visit.
Additionally, President Mirziyoyev will take part in the inaugural summit of heads of state within the Central Asia plus Japan dialogue framework. The summit will address cooperation opportunities in areas such as green economy and sustainable development, enhancing regional connectivity and partnerships, and the development of human resources.
