Uzbekistan’s solar and wind power plants have reached a new milestone, producing 9bn kWh of electricity as of 7:00 p.m. on October 22, the Ministry of Energy reported.
Currently, the country operates 12 solar and 5 wind power plants with a combined capacity of 4,682 megawatts. The production of this amount of “green” energy has saved 2.73bn cubic meters of natural gas and prevented the release of 4mn tons of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
From the beginning of the year to October 22, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power plants together generated 14.52bn kWh of electricity, accounting for 23% of Uzbekistan’s total electricity production. This is enough to meet the electricity needs of 7.5mn households for 10 months or 6mn households for an entire year.
Only a month ago, on September 22, solar and wind plants had generated 8bn kWh, highlighting the rapid growth of the sector.
Uzbekistan is exploring opportunities to export electricity to Europe through Azerbaijan. Ulugbek Urunov, advisor to the chairman of the board and press secretary of the joint-stock company, stated that the country has sufficient potential to supply European markets, though some power units may need to operate at reduced capacity during certain parts of the day.
