Kazakhstan has commenced the construction of the strategically significant "Center–West" transport corridor, a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and unlocking new transit opportunities through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).
Work officially began in two locations—Arkalyk city and the village of Torgai in the Zhangeldinsky district of Kostanay region—marking the start of a road that will stretch 865 kilometers along the route Astana – Zhanteke – Egindikol – Arkalyk – Torgai – Irgiz.
The launch of this project follows the directive of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced during the IV meeting of the National Kurultai, and falls under the government’s broader strategy to modernize Kazakhstan’s transport infrastructure and enhance its transit capacity.
The new corridor will directly connect central and western Kazakhstan, offering a streamlined route to the TITR—an emerging trade artery linking Asia and Europe via the Caspian Sea. The road is expected to reduce the travel distance between Astana and Irgiz by 573 kilometers.
Construction is progressing simultaneously in two directions—from Arkalyk toward Astana and from Torgai toward Irgiz—accelerating timelines and maximizing regional economic impact. Authorities anticipate that the new route will bolster the economic development of adjacent areas and significantly improve the quality of life for residents.
Environmental considerations have played a key role in the design process. In areas where saiga antelope migrate, the road’s cross-section has been adapted to reduce barriers to wildlife movement. A slope of 1:10 will facilitate safe and uninterrupted passage for animals, ensuring ecological balance.
During the launch ceremony, Vice Minister of Transport Satzhan Ablaliyev highlighted the corridor’s importance in strengthening Kazakhstan’s regional connectivity and expanding its role as a transit hub in Eurasia.
Kostanay region Akim (mayor) Kumar Aksakalov stressed the broader impact of the project, stating that the development of a comprehensive logistics network will particularly benefit the southern districts of the region and contribute to national growth.
