The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the killing of a Chinese national in Afghanistan's northern Takhar province, according to Reuters.
Afghan authorities in Takhar confirmed the murder, stating that a preliminary investigation had been launched. However, at the time, they did not identify the perpetrators. The Islamic State has since alleged that it targeted a vehicle carrying the Chinese national, resulting in his death and damage to the vehicle.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed shock and condemnation over the attack. Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged Afghanistan's interim government to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and projects in the country.
"We are deeply shocked by this attack and demand a thorough investigation, with severe punishment for the perpetrators," Mao said during a regular press briefing on January 23.
China has sought to strengthen trade and investment ties with Afghanistan under the Taliban administration and was the first country to appoint an ambassador to Kabul since the Taliban's takeover in 2021. The Taliban has repeatedly pledged to restore stability in the war-torn nation, but violence continues to pose a significant challenge.
The attack in Takhar follows other incidents targeting Chinese nationals. In December 2022, a Kabul hotel frequented by Chinese investors was attacked, with Islamic State claiming responsibility for that incident as well.
