Each year, the government allocates at least UZS 100bn ($7.7mn) from the state budget to equip medical institutions with modern technology, reflecting a strong commitment to improving public health. In 2024 alone, foreign investments reached $200mn, with an additional $94mn in grants directed towards enhancing medical facilities with high-tech equipment.
On January 20, the president examined proposals aimed at enhancing medical institutions and improving service quality. As part of ongoing efforts, this year, the government has increased the budget allocation to UZS 200bn ($15.4mn), with $370mn in foreign investment expected to flow into the healthcare sector.
These investments have already had a significant impact. Advanced equipment such as CT scanners, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, and angiographs, previously available only in national medical centers, are now present in regional hospitals and dozens of districts, making specialized services more accessible to the population.
Plans for further upgrading medical facilities were presented, with notable projects funded by international partners. The Asian Development Bank is investing $100mn to supply 21,000 medical devices and six resuscitation vehicles to 230 maternity hospitals across the country.
Additionally, €30mn from the German KfW bank will equip 19 medical institutions in Karakalpakstan and Khorezm with 862 devices for treating cardiovascular diseases. Another €13.5mn from the same bank will help construct a new training center and student dormitory in Termez, featuring modern educational technologies.
While the focus on equipment is essential, the Head of State stressed the importance of training skilled specialists to operate the new technologies effectively. The government has set a task to enhance the training of doctors and nurses in relevant institutions.
The Head of State also noted that the underutilization of high-tech equipment is a concern, citing the 34% average usage rate of angiographs in the regions. To address this issue, outsourcing and public-private partnership projects will be launched in collaboration with local authorities to ensure more efficient use of equipment in public hospitals.
