The Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported a substantial rise in the water volume of the Northern Aral Sea, adding 1.1 bn cubic meters to reach a total of 21.4 bn cubic meters. This update was conveyed during the 86th session of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination, which includes Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
At the meeting, it was agreed that 997 mn cubic meters of water would be directed into the Northern Aral Sea throughout the irrigation season, aiming for a consistent inflow of at least 30 cubic meters per second. Presently, the sea benefits from a flow rate of 50 cubic meters per second, a significant improvement from last year's six cubic meters per second.
The completion of the Kokaral dam, crucial for separating the Northern Aral Sea from its southern counterpart, played a pivotal role in boosting water levels. Moldir Abdualiyeva, spokesperson for the ministry, mentioned that since the dam's initiation, the Syrdarya River contributed 46.6 bn cubic meters of water to the Northern Aral Sea.
The Kyrgyz Republic contributes 75% of the Syrdarya River's flow, Uzbekistan 20%, and Kazakhstan 5%, highlighting their collective efforts in sustaining and rejuvenating the Northern Aral Sea's water levels.
