The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, extended his deepest condolences to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, following a series of devastating terrorist attacks in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, Dagestan, press secretary of the president reported.
The assaults claimed the lives of at least 15 law enforcement officers, several civilians, and an Orthodox priest while injuring at least 12 others.
The attacks, which occurred on June 23, targeted multiple places of worship and a police post, coinciding with the Pentecost festival of the Russian Orthodox Church. Churches, a synagogue, and a police checkpoint were assaulted by gunmen, leading to significant loss of life and property.
In his letter, President Mirziyoyev condemned the terrorist attacks and expressed readiness to continue active cooperation between relevant structures in the fight against these threats.
About the Attack
The assailants targeted an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent, as well as a church and a police checkpoint in Makhachkala. Authorities confirmed the deaths of numerous police officers, National Guard members, and civilians, including the Russian Orthodox Church's archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov.
Russia's Investigative Committee has launched criminal investigations into the incidents, labeling them as "acts of terror." The attackers, who were reportedly members of an "international terrorist organization," were neutralized by Dagestan's security forces.
The assaults have shaken the predominantly Muslim region of Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya and has a history of sporadic violence. Despite a decline in unrest over the years, this coordinated attack on civilian and religious infrastructure has deeply shocked the nation.
The attacks come three months after 133 people were killed when gunmen opened fire at a rock concert in the Crocus City Hall on the outskirts of Moscow. In April, Russia's FSB security service announced the arrest of four individuals in Dagestan, suspecting them of planning the Crocus City Hall attack.
