Uzbekistan has celebrated the successful completion of its ambitious English Speaking Nation (ESN) program, a four-year initiative, worth $7mn aimed at enhancing English language teaching proficiency across the country. Launched in November 2019 through a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Education and the U.S. Embassy, the program achieved significant milestones, impacting over 18,000 English teachers nationwide.
Implemented by the American Councils for International Education, the ESN program focused on equipping English teachers with innovative teaching methodologies to elevate the language skills of public school students. A key aspect of the program was the comprehensive training provided to educators, ensuring they were well-equipped to deliver effective lessons in English.
A total of 693 teachers underwent specialized training, engaging in a rigorous 60-hour course to become certified trainers and mentors. This initiative resulted in the establishment of a widespread network of experienced educators across Uzbekistan, enabling them to impart their knowledge to over 18,000 colleagues spanning all regions of the country.
Moreover, 452 teachers received prestigious certifications through the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program, involving an intensive 140-hour training course. The recent completion of TESOL training by the final cohort of 66 teachers on March 16 marked a significant milestone in the program's journey.
Feedback from participants highlighted notable improvements in various areas, including enhanced confidence in English language instruction, refined lesson planning skills, and measurable advancements in student learning outcomes. The emergence of teacher leaders within schools underscored the program's transformative impact on educational practices nationwide.
Participating teachers garnered commendation from school principals for their adoption of innovative teaching methodologies, which contributed to substantial enhancements in students' English language proficiency levels. The positive reception from school administrators further affirmed the efficacy of the ESN program in driving tangible results within Uzbekistan's education sector.
