More than 108,000 individuals have been evacuated from flooded regions across Kazakhstan as the nation grapples with the aftermath of heavy flooding, the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan reported.
Reports indicate that civil protection services have successfully rescued 108,200 people, including 38,706 children, while 11,950 individuals have been able to return to their homes. However, the crisis persists with 7,444 people, including 3,111 children, currently seeking refuge in temporary accommodation centers, where 126 emergency psychological services are being provided to support those affected.
The inundation has affected several regions, including Abay, Akmola, Aktobe, Atyrau, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, and Ulitov, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency in these areas. The severity of the situation has led to the initiation of investigations by the Prosecutor General's Office into alleged negligence by officials in fulfilling their duties in response to the floods.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has pledged compensation for the damages incurred by the affected population, emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting those affected by the natural disaster. However, concerns remain high as weather forecasters from "Kazhydromet" warn of the potential for a second wave of flooding in several regions, heightening the urgency of relief efforts.
The flooding, attributed to a rapid snowmelt triggered by sudden warming, has left a trail of devastation in its wake. While the full extent of the damage is yet to be officially assessed, calculations by the Eurasia Insurance Company of Kazakhstan estimate potential damages to reach approximately KZT 6bn ($13.4mn). Official confirmation from government sources is pending on this matter.
In response to the crisis, President Tokayev has taken decisive action, canceling the upcoming Astana International Forum scheduled for June 13-14. The decision, aimed at reallocating resources towards addressing the aftermath of the flooding, underscores the government's prioritization of relief efforts to mitigate the impact on affected communities.
