Turkmenistan is in favour of creating a UN Security Conference on Central Asia and its neighbouring regions, local television Altyn Asyr reports.
The head of the People's Council (Halk Maslahaty) Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said this during his visit to Tajikistan. He also called for support for the work of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, which has been based in Ashgabat since 2007.
In his meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, he spoke of the importance of partnership in the consultative meetings of Central Asian leaders "in the context of regional security".
Experts told Daryo that the purpose of the meeting is to develop approaches and solutions aimed at bringing together and synchronising the efforts of Central Asian countries and other interested states, international organisations, financial and economic institutions to ensure the sustainable, conflict-free development of the region.
Central Asia comprises the territory of five countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The region borders Afghanistan and Iran to the south, China to the east and Russia to the west and north.
Turkmenistan has been in a state of positive neutrality since 1995.
