In a bid to bolster agricultural efficiency and water conservation efforts, Kazakhstan has announced an increase in subsidies for farmers. The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, revealed that up to 80% of the expenses incurred by farmers for drilling wells will now be subsidized.
This announcement came during Nurzhigitov's recent working trip to the Zhambyl region, where he convened a meeting with regional authorities including the akim, Yerbol Karashukeyev. The focus of the discussion centered on enhancing the local water sector and gearing up for the upcoming irrigation season.
Highlighting the government's commitment to promoting water conservation, Nurzhigitov stated;
"The Ministry has taken a number of measures to encourage farmers to save water and use it efficiently."
He emphasized that alongside the increased subsidies for well drilling costs, efforts are underway to elevate subsidies for the installation of water-saving systems from 50% to 80%. Moreover, local authorities are tasked with disseminating information about these support measures to the population.
Nurzhigitov further outlined the national agenda set forth by the president of Kazakhstan, which includes specific targets for each region to expand the adoption of water-saving technologies. In the Zhambyl region alone, plans are underway to increase the area utilizing such technologies from 73,000 hectares this year to an additional 22,000 hectares by 2024.
The meeting also featured reports from various departments responsible for water management, including the Shu-Talas Basin Inspectorate and the Zhambyl regional branch of the RSE "Kazvodkhoz." Additionally, domestic and foreign companies specializing in water-saving technologies showcased their products, signaling a concerted effort to leverage innovation in the sector.
During his tour of the region, Minister Nurzhigitov intends to visit several districts including Kordai, Shu, and Merken, to personally assess the progress of water development projects. This hands-on approach underscores the government's proactive stance toward ensuring sustainable water management practices across the country.
